During the season, basketball players never really stop. Because teams will often play two games a week with only a few days in-between, one of the biggest challenges coaches face is making sure their players don’t exhaust themselves in practice and have their in-game performance suffer.

 

One of the key ways coaches try to keep exhaustion in check while still keeping their team in shape is by having a slower-paced practice (running about three miles) followed by an intense one (running five or more miles), and then easing up again before game day. The idea is that the players develop an internal rhythm that lets them leave it all on the court for game one without losing that pace for game two.

Coaches Can’t See Everything

 

Unfortunately, problems can arise from this approach. A practice that is supposed to be slower could push the players too hard and leave them in poor shape for the game. On the other hand, taking it too easy on practices that should be hard leaves your team at a competitive disadvantage because they won’t be in same shape as the competition. Worse, even if the practices themselves are perfectly balanced, players could “hide” during hard practices or over-extend themselves during practices that are supposed to be relaxed.
